Privacy Policy
(Personal Information Protection Act 2004)
The Chiropractors and
Osteopaths Registration Board of Tasmania (the Board) is committed to the protection
of private information.
The functions of the Board are to administer
the scheme of registration, to monitor the standard of services that chiropractors
and osteopaths provide, to investigate complaints and, as necessary, undertake
disciplinary action against chiropractors and osteopaths as required by the Chiropractors
and Osteopaths Registration Act 1997.
In carrying out these functions
the Board is the custodian of personal information and the collection, use and
disclosure of that information is governed by the Personal Information Protection
Act 2004.
Pursuant to Section 30 of the Chiropractors and Osteopaths
Registration Act 1997, the Board must maintain a Register of Chiropractors and
Osteopaths. The information that must be contained in the Register is prescribed
in Section 30 of the Act and the Board may from time to time record additional
information on the Register.
Reasonable steps are taken to ensure that
the personal information held is accurate, complete and up to date and securely
stored. Where practicable, the accuracy of personal information is checked before
it is used.
The Register of Chiropractors and Osteopaths is a public
document.
The Board will only use or disclose information in ways that
are consistent with the Act or as required in the public interest.
The Register
is available for inspection at the Board offices and a copy of the Register may
be obtained for non-commercial purposes on payment of the prescribed fee. The
publicly available information from the Register is restricted to the name, registration
number and mailing address of a registered practitioner, date of first registration,
relevant qualifications and conditions (if any) imposed on registration and any
information relating to Section 30(3) of the Chiropractors and Osteopaths Registration
Act. Other information will not be released without the authority of the Practitioner
to do so.
Chiropractors and osteopaths will have access to
the information held about them and can request that the information be amended.
Under circumstances where there is a complaint about a chiropractor
or osteopath from a member of the public and the Board obtains private information
relating to the complainant, the Board will not release that information to anyone
unless there is a written authorisation to do so from the complainant.
Requests to access or correct any personal information other than information
held on the Register will be processed under the provisions of the Freedom of
Information Act 1991. Depending upon the nature of the request a fee may be charged
for this service. If a person is not satisfied with the handling or outcome of
a request for access to or correction of personal information, a complaint can
be lodged with the Ombudsman. The Ombudsman's Office can be contacted on 1300
766 725 or ombudsman@justice.tas.gov.au.
Information is destroyed or
permanently de-identified when it is no longer required, in accordance with processes
approved by the State Archivist under the Archives Act 1983
